A horizontal line just appeared out of nowhere today while I was using my computer...I used it EVERY day, and didnt do anything different...

now there is a horizontal line, looks to be only one pixel wide/tall, all the way across my screen left to right. It is a 17" old CRT monitor (the old big boxy kinds)

is the monitor bad (four years old)? video card (built-into motherboard)? or what?

THANKS!!

I would say your monitor is poked, if it was your onboard GPU it would be more than a line on your screen, But in saying that use process of elimination, try a different monitor (if you havent got a spare beg a mate to borrow theirs for few hours), now its not like you can just take out the onboard GPU and stick in another but what you can do is put in a graphics card hopefully your motherboard has either a AGP or PCIE bus for one.. If it is your monitor replace it with a nice flat panel monitor, they are not to badly priced these days.. Hope this helps DiGgZ :)

Are you sure you didn't just for the first time notice one of the two lines that exist on flat crt monitors which are part of the design that keeps the scanning straight? Mine(17"dell sony trinitron) has two lines across the screen from left to right dividing the screen in thirds approximately.

Read the "notes" part on the link below describing what I'm talking about.

Yes, CRT's can go bad especially if you have been using it for four years. You might want to consider getting a new one. I am sure you can find another CRT fairly cheap in the classifieds or online sales if you don't want to spend a whole lot of money.

The problem is with the monitor. Where you see the line the monitor is unable to refresh the phosphors.
