My graphic designer is crying for new monitor but: CRTs are not to be found any more and LCDs show the same color differently at the top compared to the bottom of the screen.
.
No, it is not the angle I am looking from at the LCD, it allways shows a difference. (test e.g. open Excel, create new spreadsheet, select all, fill ti with light yellow and you will see completelly different yellow at the top than at the bottom).
.
Any idea what kind of monitor to buy for him?

I'm a graphics designer and I am using two 17inches LCD monitors on one computer. No problems at all. Buy him a nice high-end LCD monitor (it would be much better if you could buy em two sets).

new apple mac if you can afford it.

if not then get at least a 22" monitor.

Idealy you want one that can show an A3 spread in actual size.

im a graphic designer myself and im working on a 22" imac

im sure yor designer would love to work with one.

But as you said, the colour on these still change top to bottom, you def. need to be looking at the screen head on.,.. but its not as bad as the other mac which is attached to its own monitor, i think its the old G5 mac with a dell monitor.

well lcds only display different colour when they become old, as the crystals go down to the bottom of the screen.

buy another cheap LCD, a 19 inch, quite cheap and will last for at least a year.
