Alright well recently my lcd monitor got knocked over, so I had a spare lcd tv with vga/dvi/hdmi inputs in back, and I decided to use that for a monitor. My videocard died a few weeks ago, so I am using onboard video over vga. Now: here's what i'm wondering. Will an upgraded video card (using hdmi) increase my PICTURE QUALITY? like images and my desktop and such. Not referring to videos and games, I already know that it will run those better.

Also, I assume that I can use hdmi for just video and then use my sound card for sound?

Most likely it WONT improve. You see, video cards only improve 3D related elements. 2D elements are effected entirely by CPU and RAM. Ive noticed this first hand when I benchmarked Photoshop with and without a graphics card, There was literally almost no difference in performance. IF you want better picture quality, get a better monitor.

And yes, your assumption is correct on your second question.

a lot of the new GTX 200 series cards from nvidia have sound output through hdmi capabilities, you just need to connect the spdif to the mobo header. I'm not sure about ATI's cards but their newer ones probably have the same thing.

but, if you want good picture quality a newer graphics card is really not going to do as much as getting a new monitor. After owning about 20 different monitors, I would recommend a samsung syncmaster.

Most likely it will be improved, whether or not you notice an improvement will also depend on your monitor and what resolution you'll be running. And yes, the HDMI output through sound cards carries only video, so use your sound card for audio.
