I went to control panel (screen resolution) and made it extra large still it's not working. Even the letters in windows live messenger has decreased, and there seems no option where I can increase the font size. I have windows xp and compaq monitor. Is there anything I could do to make them bigger?

You changed monitors - is the display size (viewing area) different? In resolution, more is less. 1024 dots in one inch makes the same displayed item look smaller than if you selected 800 dots per. Starting at the desktop (where the icons live) right click and select properties. Click the settings tab, and screen resolution - use 800 x 600. This is the largest of the VGA settings. Changing font size only effects text.
