Windows 7 Screen Resolution Problems!?

Hi,
I have a problem with my screen resolution on my computer.
Im currently running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, and im trying to display it on my 42" TV. It is connected through HDMI and works but has a few problems.
When i change the screen resolution to the recommended 1920 x 1080 each corner is off the screen and looks slightly pixelated in general. So i played around with the screen Resolution and every single Resolution is either to large for the screen to fit or to small. Except for 1176 x 664. However this Resolution works fine but windows think that my 42" TV is actually the size of a small notebook meaning everything is huge like icons and start bar etc... this also means i cant run certain programs because it is such a small resolution. So i can either have clear display with huge icons and task bar, or normal sized icons with slightly pixelated screen with the sides not being displayed.

So my question is, Can i get my 42" TV to display 1920x1080 correctly?

If iv totally confused you then here are some links of print screens with both display resolutions.

Small Display (1176x664) - http://s13.postimg.org/g5a2v2pnb/Small_Display.png

Any help on this would be good! Thanks :D

If your TV/monitor can handle 1920x1080 it will display it.

The problem you have is that on a 42" screen, icons will seem bigger, but that's because the screen is scaled to that size. So your 42" screen is displaying what a 1920x1080 screen looks like when blown up to 42". You will get pixelation at some point.

Also, the pixels on your 42" TV can be bigger than pixels on a smaller screen.

That adds to pixelation as well.

On the TV/monitor you should have controls for adjusting height x width so that everything fits the screen.
