I just bought a HPw2408h monitor that supports 1920 x 1200 resolution, but my computer wont let me switch to it. I have a HD 4800 Radeon card which I am pretty sure should be able to switch to it. I messed around with ATI catalyst control center but I still wouldnt let me switch. Any ideas?

Don't use that DVI-to-VGA converter. Just connect your Radeon's DVI port directly to the monitor's DVI port using a standard DVI cable.

VGA is analog. DVI is a digital connection and might allow your graphics card to better detect what display modes the monitor will support.

HP is making monitors that have HDCP

It is a scheme like DRM to keep you from viewing High Definition copyrighted video that doesn't have a 40bit code.

No video card manufacturers are currently implementing HDCP although they say their cards are "ready".They aren't processing the code yet.

When your monitor doesn't detect the code it will limit resolution or just cut the signal.

I don't have HDCP so I don't know how to deal with it.Some say in the posts in the following link that using the DVI will bypass the HDCP I have no idea if it works.

Right click on the desktop. Properties, Settings.

Move the slider to the desired setting, if your video card supports it

Good luck
