What's wrong with my laptop monitor? Flickering/Jumping/Black areas?

For the past two days, my monitor screen has been flickering/jumping.I've ran several full-depth virus scans, yet found no viruses.

Also two days ago, on the right side of my monitor, a white bar appeared. The bar soon became full of coloured lines, and horizontal coloured lines appear across the entire screen sometimes.

Shortly afterwards, after pressing on the monitor screen, areas have became "black" in appearance. Whenever pressed, the areas expand in size quite dramatically and do not decrease in size again.

I haven't spilt anything either. Do I need a new monitor or something?

P.S: I'm not good with computers, so please keep the explanation easy.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire 5738Z - Vista.

IMHO this laptop is now a desktop. You need to hook up a monitor to it and see if that works. This sounds two fold and that's odd. On one side you say black areas and that suggests artifacts. The full explanation you give doesn't suggest defined black areas such as blocks but just black areas. The LCD(liquid crystal display) contains a ton of little things( specific enough for you?) that will change color as electricity passes through them. If there isn't any juice flowing you will get the black areas you have spoken with. This sounds like a pressure wound so to speak. It isn't just 1 or 6 bad pixels. The lines suggest a bad GPU(graphics processing unit). This is separate from laptop screen black areas. Lines which are usually green, purple, white and yellow scream damaged GPU. With those issues in mind it sounds like this laptop has taken quite a fall to damage the screen as well as the GPU. I would try a cheap(free from craigslist) CRT monitor to see if these errors still occur which I think they will. I hope a new monitor helps but if not you might take it to a shop and see if they can repair it. If the repair costs more than the laptop I would dispose of this responsibly at a computer recycling center. There are hazardous chemicals that we do not want seeping into our groundwater or landfills.

Ya like Goerge said, look for a free or a cheap monitor on Craigslist and hook it to your laptop to use it and see. Generally, the screen is the most expensive part of a laptop, better to get a new laptop, new one or an used one on Craigslist or may be something like an Ipad or Google nexus 7.

I'm now not optimistic..However i feel that you have reset one of the vital lights settings. You should both be able to look down in the correct hand nook and see a little bit % to click on. Or you should be equipped to repair it with the aid of going to your "settings" & making a choice on the correct alternative. I do not know what company or mannequin your computer is or i might be capable to be more designated with precisely what to click on! Hope this helps some though...
