What is wrong with my screen resolution and or monitor?

I've been having issues with my screen resolution and or monitor for quite some time now. Three months ago, I came home from a trip to find my screen resolution enlarged at the login screen for no apparent reason. No one used my machine, and I didn't change the resolution. I attempted to revert the screen resolution settings back to the way were, but was unable to find the resolution I used before. However, I found a resolution that would make do. Unfortunately the screen's resolution is a bit "fuzzy." I have installed the latest display driver updates through Windows as well as installing display driver updates from the ATI Radeon website. The problem was not resolved.

Yesterday, I decided to put my monitor on a book to raise its height. While doing this, the screen shut off. I shut the computer off, unplugged the VGA cable from the monitor and computer, and plugged them back in. When I turned the computer back on, the screen had a green tint.

Today, I plugged my monitor in with an HDMI cable. The screen resolution is set to 1920 by 1080, and will not fit my screen. My monitor also has settings that I can fiddle with. And for some reason, while my HDMI cable is plugged in, I am unable to change the horizontal and vertical position of the screen.

This seems to be a problem with either my monitor, my display driver, or the cables connecting the two. The screen's slight blurriness, and inability to change the monitor position are becoming quite the annoyance.

Does anyone know why I am unable to change the position of the monitor? I was able to do it in the past when the VGA cable was plugged in.

Could the random enlargement and blurring of my screen been a virus of some sort?

Are HDMI to DVI cables better than HDMI to HDMI cables?

This is a ton of information, and I'm sure there are questions I didn't include that should have been asked. Please leave any information that may help me to making my monitor and or display work properly again. Have a great 2012!

Any monitor has a "native" resolution. It will look best at this resolution or a simple division, half, two-thirds, three-quarters etc. If you pick a close resolution it will look blurry. You can find your monitor's native resolution in its specs.

Your computer should be able to detect what monitor you have. You will see that in the page about your resolution. If it does not show your make and model then find the driver for your monitor.

On your monitor there should be an AUTO button that will detect what is being sent to it and automatically adjust itself.
